Pioneers Lovejoy and Pettygrove shared a claim along the Willamette River but each wanted to name it after their own hometowns—Lovejoy from Boston, MA and Pettygrove from Portland, ME. We could call one earring Boston and the other Portland but that would be no fun, Lovejoy it is!
